Books for children can be graded in complexity by reading levels known as book bands. Book banding enables schools to use these books at the appropriate level to help children learn to read, then go on to develop and practise their reading skills.
Books can be graded from lilac to dark red, a colour standardisation which has been adopted by many publishers and allows teachers to measure children's reading progress across a wide range of materials. Books also banded black are books which provide stretch and challenge for your gifted and talented readers at a given level.
