Bertie rescues an orphaned white lion cub from the African bush. Inseparable until Bertie has to go away to boarding school and the lion is sold to a circus, the boy swears that one day they will see one another again.
School is followed by the war, and Bertie, who has never forgotten his friend, has his faith rewarded when he and the lion find each other in war-torn France.
They return to England together where in due course, the lion dies gently of old age.
