Marathon Man to raise £4,000!
Bakery worker, Nigel Vardy, who hopes to raise over £4,000 for the local
21st Century Kids Appeal by running the New York Marathon with Century FM in
November, has come up with a unique raffle prize - a week of his own holiday
entitlement.
Nigel, from Brandon in County Durham, has been a bakery operative for two years with Peters Bakery, sponsors of the charity, and intends to raffle his week's holiday at an event at the company's Peterlee bakery on Tuesday 24th May. He commented, "I approached Richard Knowles, MD of Peters Bakery, to see if I could get time off in November for the marathon and we came up with the idea of raffling the week's holiday I'm giving up - whoever bids the most will get an additional week's holiday. I've already raised £950.00 and hope to make the rest by November."
"I ran the Edinburgh Marathon two years ago and loved the experience so this seemed a great way to raise money for local children and to get to take part in one of the great sporting events of the year."
Catriona Bryden, Charity Manager for Century FM's 21st Century Kids, added, "All the money raised in the Northeast stays in the Northeast, and the support we receive from Peters Bakery has proved fantastically successful by not only making it easy for people to donate at any of their 71 branches, but also by the magnificent efforts of their own staff who have so far raised an amazing £5,000 themselves through raffles and other events."
"We're taking 10 people to run the New York Marathon in November and can promise them a trip of a lifetime. Each one has promised to raise a minimum of £2,000 and we're hoping that the final figures will be even more. We've also got a number of other events planned for the year and hope to raise some £100,000 for the charity over the first twelve months."
21st Century Kids raises money for less advantaged children in the NE region. All money raised in the NE stays in the NE and funds are distributed to other NE children's charities and groups. Grant application forms for projects are available in Peters Bakery shops.
